- WHAT IS MENOPAUSE?expand_less
Menopause is a natural phase for anyone who has a female reproductive system, when periods stop, marking the end of reproductive years. It is typically experienced between the ages of 45-55 and is characterised by hormonal changes that lead to a range of physical and emotional symptoms.
- WHAT ARE THE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF MENOPAUSE?expand_more
Common symptoms of menopause include hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, changes in libido, and irregular menstrual cycles.
- WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR MANAGING MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS?expand_more

- WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND RISKS OF HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (HRT)?expand_more
The main medicine treatment for menopause and perimenopause symptoms is hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which replaces the hormones that are at low levels. The risks of HRT are small and usually outweighed by the benefits.
If you're considering HRT, your doctor can talk with you about the potential risks and help decide whether it's the right option for you, based on your individual health needs.
- WHAT COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES ARE AVAILABLE FOR MANAGING MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS?expand_more
Complementary and alternative treatments, such as herbal remedies and compounded bioidentical ("natural") hormones, are not recommended for symptoms of the menopause or perimenopause.
They are different from regulated bioidentical hormones, also called body identical hormones, which are available on the NHS as HRT.
Some complementary and alternative therapies can also interact with other medicines and cause side effects.
It's important to ask your GP or pharmacist for advice if you're thinking about using a complementary therapy.
