POSTMENOPAUSE
Postmenopause marks the time periods have stopped for 12 consecutive months, due to the body adjusting to hormone changes that have happened during menopause. It’s important to understand the changes that happen during this stage, as well as the symptoms and management options available, to feel empowered and confident navigating this time in life.

HOW DO I RECOGNISE THE POSTMENOPAUSE STAGE?
The absence of periods for 12 consecutive months is the key indicator of transitioning to postmenopause.
In addition, the reduction in symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings, and changes in libido, indicate that the body has adapted to these previous hormonal changes.
WILL I EXPERIENCE PHYSICAL CHANGES DURING THIS STAGE?
During the postmenopause stage, as the hormone levels stabilise, a reduction in the intensity and frequency of menopausal symptoms may be experienced.
Rapid bone loss in the early years after menopause, with increased risk of osteoporosis if menopause occurs before age 45 or following ovary removal.
Risk for developing cardiovascular diseases tends to increase after menopause. The loss of oestrogen can cause unfavourable changes in cholesterol levels and a potential build-up of fat in the arteries. This leads to a higher risk of hypertension and a greater risk of developing heart and circulatory disease.
Having an understanding these physical changes can help to focus on maintaining overall well-being during postmenopause life.
